Few drama and romance titles spark as much curiosity as The Star. Below is a deep dive into what makes it worth your time. Led by Bette Davis and Sterling Hayden, the film balances spectacle with character. Read on for the full plot overview, the cast and crew, critical reception, and answers to the questions fans ask most.
Inside the story of The Star
At its core, The Star follows a story that unfolds like this: Actress Margaret Elliot is well past her prime but refuses to retire from the acting business. Despite entreaties from both her daughter, Gretchen, and one-time professional colleague Jim Johannsen, Margaret remains convinced that she can regain her former glory. As she sets her sights on a coveted Hollywood role, Johannsen tries doggedly to get his unrequited love to see the folly of her ways.
What sets it apart is how it treats its drama and romance elements not as decoration but as the engine of the plot. The tagline — "The story of a woman...who thought she was a star so high in the sky no man could touch her!" — captures that tone perfectly.
