Whether you are a longtime fan or discovering it for the first time, Shirin rewards viewers who know what to look for. Rated 6.2/10 from 38 viewers, it lands as a solid entry in the genre. Below you'll find an honest look at the story, the people behind it, and whether it deserves a spot in your queue.
What is Shirin about?
Shirin centers on a premise that unfolds like this: A hundred and fourteen famous Iranian theater and cinema actresses and a French star: mute spectators at a theatrical representation of Khosrow and Shirin, a Persian poem from the twelfth century, put on stage by Kiarostami. The development of the text -- long a favorite in Persia and the Middle East -- remains invisible to the viewer of the film, the whole story is told by the faces of the women watching the show.
Rather than rushing, the film lets tension build naturally, trusting the audience to keep up. The tagline — "You are the screen, they are the audience." — captures that tone perfectly. For a frame-by-frame breakdown, the dedicated Wikipedia entry and IMDb trivia pages are excellent companions.
