If Mistress is on your watchlist, here is the complete breakdown — plot, cast, ratings, and where to stream it in HD. Directed by Barry Primus, the project blends comedy and drama into something that lingers long after the credits. Read on for the full plot overview, the cast and crew, critical reception, and answers to the questions fans ask most.
The premise of Mistress, explained
Mistress centers on a premise that unfolds like this: A comedy about a screenwriter (Wuhl) whose old movie script is read by a producer (Landau) and the search for financial backers begins. But it seems that each money source (Aiello, DeNiro, Wallach) has his own mistress that he wants put into the film. Gradually, the screenwriter is forced to make changes to his script to accommodate these backers until he finally sees no semblance of his original ideas in the writing.
What sets it apart is how it treats its comedy and drama elements not as decoration but as the engine of the plot. The tagline — "The Director Had A Vision. The Producers All Had Girlfriends." — captures that tone perfectly. For a frame-by-frame breakdown, the dedicated Wikipedia entry and IMDb trivia pages are excellent companions.
