Few comedy, drama, music, and romance titles spark as much curiosity as Down Argentine Way. Below is a deep dive into what makes it worth your time. Led by Don Ameche and Betty Grable, the film balances spectacle with character. Read on for the full plot overview, the cast and crew, critical reception, and answers to the questions fans ask most.
Down Argentine Way plot and story overview
At its core, Down Argentine Way follows a story that unfolds like this: The story—in which an American heiress on holiday in South America falls in love with an Argentine horse breeder against the wishes of their families—takes a backseat to the spectacular location shooting and parade of extravagant musical numbers, which include the larger-than-life Carmen Miranda singing the hit “South American Way” and a showstopping dance routine by the always amazing Nicholas Brothers.
Rather than rushing, the film lets tension build naturally, trusting the audience to keep up. The tagline — "GLAMOROUS BUENOS AIRES NIGHT LIFE WITH SOUTH AMERICAN'S TANTALIZING, TORRID-VOICED CARMEN MIRANDA" — captures that tone perfectly.
