The premise of C.H.U.D., explained
The narrative of C.H.U.D. unfolds like this: A rash of bizarre murders in New York City seems to point to a group of grotesquely deformed vagrants living in the sewers. A courageous policeman, a photojournalist and his girlfriend, and a nutty bum, who seems to know a lot about the creatures, band together to try and determine what the creatures are and how to stop them.
What sets it apart is how it treats its horror and science fiction elements not as decoration but as the engine of the plot. The tagline — "They're not staying down there anymore!" — captures that tone perfectly. For a frame-by-frame breakdown, the dedicated Wikipedia entry and IMDb trivia pages are excellent companions.
