Wish You Were Here plot and story overview
At its core, Wish You Were Here follows a story that unfolds like this: In a staid English seaside town after the Second World War, young Lynda grows up with her widowed father and younger sister. Rebellious Lynda has been swearing constantly from an early age. At sixteen, she becomes more exhibitionist and seeks out sexual encounters challenging the prevailing lower-middle class attitudes to sex.
What sets it apart is how it treats its comedy, drama, and romance elements not as decoration but as the engine of the plot. The tagline — "Some people march to the beat of a different drummer. Lynda’s got her own brass band." — captures that tone perfectly. For a frame-by-frame breakdown, the dedicated Wikipedia entry and IMDb trivia pages are excellent companions.
