The Whole Town's Talking (1935) has become one of the most talked-about comedy and crime films, and this guide covers everything you need before you press play. Led by Edward G. Robinson and Jean Arthur, the film balances spectacle with character. Below you'll find an honest look at the story, the people behind it, and whether it deserves a spot in your queue.
Inside the story of The Whole Town's Talking
At its core, The Whole Town's Talking follows a story that unfolds like this: Ordinary man-in-the-street Arthur Ferguson Jones leads a very straightforward life. He's never late for work and nothing interesting ever happens to him. One day everything changes: he oversleeps and is fired as an example, he's then mistaken for evil criminal killer Mannion and is arrested. The resemblance is so striking that the police give him a special pass to avoid a similar mistake. The real Mannion sees the opportunity to steal the pass and move around freely and chaos results.
What sets it apart is how it treats its comedy and crime elements not as decoration but as the engine of the plot. The tagline — "The most exciting picture in a decade..Inspired by the biggest front page sensation in recent years" — captures that tone perfectly.
