The Westerner (1940) has become one of the most talked-about western films, and this guide covers everything you need before you press play. Directed by William Wyler, the project blends western into something that lingers long after the credits. Below you'll find an honest look at the story, the people behind it, and whether it deserves a spot in your queue.
The Westerner plot and story overview
The Westerner centers on a premise that unfolds like this: Drifter Cole Harden is accused of stealing a horse and faces hanging by self-appointed Judge Roy Bean, but Harden manages to talk his way out of it by claiming to be a friend of stage star Lillie Langtry, with whom the judge is obsessed, even though he has never met her. Tensions rise when Harden comes to the defense of a group of struggling homesteaders who Judge Bean is trying to drive away.
What sets it apart is how it treats its western elements not as decoration but as the engine of the plot. The tagline — "THE RAW UNTAMED ADVENTUROUS WEST...LIVES AGAIN!" — captures that tone perfectly.
