The Russia House

The Russia House centers on a premise that unfolds like this: Barley Scott Blair, a Lisbon-based editor of Russian literature who unexpectedly begins working for British intelligence, is commissioned to investigate the purposes of Dante, a dissident scientist trapped in the decaying Soviet Union that is crumbling under the new open-minded policies.

What sets it apart is how it treats its drama, thriller, and romance elements not as decoration but as the engine of the plot. The tagline — "Their love was as dangerous as the secrets they kept." — captures that tone perfectly. The Russia House is anchored by Sean Connery, Michelle Pfeiffer, Roy Scheider, and James Fox, working under the direction of Fred Schepisi. Casting is half the battle, and this ensemble pulls its weight.

The script comes from Tom Stoppard, whose writing keeps the dialogue sharp. You can trace the full credits and filmographies on IMDb and TMDB.
