The Masks of the Devil

At its core, The Masks of the Devil follows a story that unfolds like this: Baron Reiner, a charming though unscrupulous Viennese aristocrat, becomes infatuated with Virginia, an innocent schoolgirl who is engaged to his best friend, Manfred. In order to seduce the girl, Reiner finances an oceanographic expedition for Manfred that takes him away for months (TCM).

What sets it apart is how it treats its drama elements not as decoration but as the engine of the plot. The tagline — "He Dared All For Love!" — captures that tone perfectly. For a frame-by-frame breakdown, the dedicated Wikipedia entry and IMDb trivia pages are excellent companions.
