The Island of Giant Insects (2020) has become one of the most talked-about animation, mystery, drama, horror, and adventure films, and this guide covers everything you need before you press play. Led by Mao Ichimichi and Chiaki Takahashi, the film balances spectacle with character. Below you'll find an honest look at the story, the people behind it, and whether it deserves a spot in your queue.
The Island of Giant Insects plot and story overview
The narrative of The Island of Giant Insects unfolds like this: After an airplane crash during a school trip, Oribe Mutsumi and her classmates were stranded on a seemingly deserted island. Mutsumi found the other survivors, and used her wilderness knowledge to help them. She expects that they will be rescued in about three days, which doesn't seem so long to endure. However, she didn't account for the fact that the island is populated with gigantic killer insects. Her knowledge of butterflies, wasps, and more may be the only thing that will help any of her classmates survive to be rescued!
Rather than rushing, the film lets tension build naturally, trusting the audience to keep up. The tagline — "Will they be eaten, or will they survive?" — captures that tone perfectly. For a frame-by-frame breakdown, the dedicated Wikipedia entry and IMDb trivia pages are excellent companions.
