The Hamlet Syndrome (2022) has become one of the most talked-about documentary and war films, and this guide covers everything you need before you press play. Directed by Piotr Rosołowski, the project blends documentary and war into something that lingers long after the credits. Below you'll find an honest look at the story, the people behind it, and whether it deserves a spot in your queue.
Inside the story of The Hamlet Syndrome
The Hamlet Syndrome centers on a premise that unfolds like this: Five young Ukrainians discuss life following the Maidan Revolution of 2014. Not all fought in the Russian-Ukrainian war, but it, regardless, shattered their life plans. Representing 'Generation Maidan', they face the question of how to cope with experiences of violence, how to go on. A local theatre director produces Hamlet, wherein they can use Shakespeare’s tragic character as a mirror and face their traumas onstage. For them, 'to be or not to be' is not simply text but an existential dilemma with no clear answer.
Rather than rushing, the film lets tension build naturally, trusting the audience to keep up. The tagline — "To be or not to be in Ukraine" — captures that tone perfectly. For a frame-by-frame breakdown, the dedicated Wikipedia entry and IMDb trivia pages are excellent companions.
