Whether you are a longtime fan or discovering it for the first time, The Door rewards viewers who know what to look for. Directed by István Szabó, the project blends drama into something that lingers long after the credits. Below you'll find an honest look at the story, the people behind it, and whether it deserves a spot in your queue.
The premise of The Door, explained
At its core, The Door follows a story that unfolds like this: Emerenc, an elderly and private woman, is hired to be the housekeeper of a struggling writer, Magda. An event in the writer's life prompts Emerenc to disclose details of her traumatizing past, which will bond the two women forever. Based on the novel by Magda Szabó.
Rather than rushing, the film lets tension build naturally, trusting the audience to keep up. The tagline — "There are those who sweep and those who pay others to sweep." — captures that tone perfectly.
