The Burning Soil (1922) has become one of the most talked-about drama films, and this guide covers everything you need before you press play. Directed by F. W. Inside the story of The Burning Soil
At its core, The Burning Soil follows a story that unfolds like this: When farmer Rog dies, his eldest Peter takes over the farm while his youngest Johannes is determined for a better life: he becomes secretary to Count Rudenberg and starts courting his daughter Gerda. When he learns that the Count, who is terminally ill, has bequeathed a piece of land under which lies a petroleum field to his second wife, he courts her instead.
What sets it apart is how it treats its drama elements not as decoration but as the engine of the plot. Themes of ambition, loyalty, and consequence run throughout. For a frame-by-frame breakdown, the dedicated Wikipedia entry and IMDb trivia pages are excellent companions.
