The Bluegrass Special (1977) has become one of the most talked-about drama films, and this guide covers everything you need before you press play. Directed by Andrew V. McLaglen, the project blends drama into something that lingers long after the credits. Below you'll find an honest look at the story, the people behind it, and whether it deserves a spot in your queue.
The premise of The Bluegrass Special, explained
The Bluegrass Special centers on a premise that unfolds like this: Penny is a teenage horse trainer with a very special dream of becoming a jockey. She picks Woodhill to compete in the upcoming Bluegrass Special; Woodhill is a beautiful race horse with a bad reputation who threw and injured his rider during a race in Tijuana. Penny's devotion and determination are an inspiration to anyone who believes that dreams can come true.
What sets it apart is how it treats its drama elements not as decoration but as the engine of the plot. The tagline — "A heart-tugging story about a young girl with a very special dream." — captures that tone perfectly.
