The Admirable Crichton (1957) has become one of the most talked-about adventure, comedy, and romance films, and this guide covers everything you need before you press play. Led by Kenneth More and Diane Cilento, the film balances spectacle with character. Below you'll find an honest look at the story, the people behind it, and whether it deserves a spot in your queue.
The Admirable Crichton plot and story overview
The narrative of The Admirable Crichton unfolds like this: Lord Loam has modern ideas about his household, he believes in treating his servants as his equals - at least sometimes. His butler, Crichton, still believes that members of the serving class should know their place and be happy there. But when the Loam family are shipwrecked on a desert island with the self-reliant Crichton and lady's maid Tweeny, the class system is put to the test.
Rather than rushing, the film lets tension build naturally, trusting the audience to keep up. The tagline — "The Hilarious Story of What the Girls Saw in the Butler..." — captures that tone perfectly.
