If Skin Deep is on your watchlist, here is the complete breakdown — plot, cast, ratings, and where to stream it in HD. Led by Monte Blue and Betty Compson, the film balances spectacle with character. Keep scrolling for a spoiler-light synopsis, performance highlights, and streaming details.
The premise of Skin Deep, explained
At its core, Skin Deep follows a story that unfolds like this: Skin Deep is a 1929 American talking drama film directed by Ray Enright and starring Monte Blue. It was produced and distributed by the Warner Brothers. It was also released in the U.S. in a silent version for theaters not equipped yet with sound. The film is a remake of a 1922 Associated First National silent film of the same name directed by Lambert Hillyer and starring Milton Sills. All copies of this film are now lost. However, the Vitaphone soundtrack, of music and effects, survive.
Rather than rushing, the film lets tension build naturally, trusting the audience to keep up. The tagline — "A Warner Bros. Vitaphone all talking story of a woman who double-crossed the whole world, including herself!" — captures that tone perfectly.
