Directed by Lewis Milestone, the project blends drama into something that lingers long after the credits. Read on for the full plot overview, the cast and crew, critical reception, and answers to the questions fans ask most.
Rain plot and story overview
Rain centers on a premise that unfolds like this: Due to a possible cholera epidemic onboard, passengers on a ship are forced to disembark at Pago Pago, a small village on a Pacific island where it incessantly rains. Among the stranded passengers are Sadie Thompson, a prostitute, and Alfred Davidson, a fanatic missionary who will try to redeem her.
Rather than rushing, the film lets tension build naturally, trusting the audience to keep up. The tagline — "A woman without shame. A woman without soul." — captures that tone perfectly. For a frame-by-frame breakdown, the dedicated Wikipedia entry and IMDb trivia pages are excellent companions.
