Projections (1993) has become one of the most talked-about music and documentary films, and this guide covers everything you need before you press play. Rated 8.5/10 from 2 viewers, it lands as a outstanding entry in the genre. Below you'll find an honest look at the story, the people behind it, and whether it deserves a spot in your queue.
What is Projections about?
At its core, Projections follows a story that unfolds like this: The innovative and influential British filmmaker Derek Jarman was invited to direct the Pet Shop Boys' 1989 tour. This film is a series of iconoclastic images he created for the background projections. Stunning, specially shot sequences (featuring actors, the Pet Shop Boys, and friends of Jarman) contrast with documentary montages of nature, all skillfully edited to music tracks.
The pacing rewards patient viewers, layering small details that pay off later. The tagline — "Derek Jarman's films from the Pet Shop Boys' first tour." — captures that tone perfectly. For a frame-by-frame breakdown, the dedicated Wikipedia entry and IMDb trivia pages are excellent companions.
