Few music and comedy titles spark as much curiosity as Playmates. Below is a deep dive into what makes it worth your time. Rated 5.7/10 from 6 viewers, it lands as a mixed entry in the genre. Below you'll find an honest look at the story, the people behind it, and whether it deserves a spot in your queue.
The premise of Playmates, explained
At its core, Playmates follows a story that unfolds like this: Lulu Monahan, the press agent for John Barrymore, is attempting to get a sponsor for a radio program. To that end, she and the agent for bandleader Kay Kyser, plant a story that the great Shakespearean actor, over his heartfelt objections, will teach Kyser how to play Shakespeare, which isn't the same as playing Paducah, which soon becomes evident.
What sets it apart is how it treats its music and comedy elements not as decoration but as the engine of the plot. The tagline — "See Kay go Shakespearean and Ginny go for Kay! See Barrymore get amorous and Lupe go berserk! The happiest, tuniest romantic rumpus the Old Professor ever cavorted in!" — captures that tone perfectly.
