Playing Cards (1896) has become one of the most talked-about documentary and comedy films, and this guide covers everything you need before you press play. Directed by Georges Méliès, the project blends documentary and comedy into something that lingers long after the credits. Below you'll find an honest look at the story, the people behind it, and whether it deserves a spot in your queue.
The premise of Playing Cards, explained
The narrative of Playing Cards unfolds like this: Three friends are playing cards in a beer garden. One of them orders drinks. The waitress comes back with a bottle of wine and three glasses on a tray. The man serves his friends. They clink glasses and drink. Then the man asks for a newspaper. He reads a funny story in it and the three friends burst out laughing while the waitress merely smiles.
Rather than rushing, the film lets tension build naturally, trusting the audience to keep up. The tagline — "Early Méliès short made up of footage of he and some friends playing cards." — captures that tone perfectly.
