Whether you are a longtime fan or discovering it for the first time, Obit rewards viewers who know what to look for. Led by William McDonald and Bruce Weber, the film balances spectacle with character. Below you'll find an honest look at the story, the people behind it, and whether it deserves a spot in your queue.
Obit plot and story overview
The narrative of Obit unfolds like this: How do you put a life into 500 words? Ask the staff obituary writers at the New York Times. OBIT is a first-ever glimpse into the daily rituals, joys and existential angst of the Times obit writers, as they chronicle life after death on the front lines of history.
What sets it apart is how it treats its documentary elements not as decoration but as the engine of the plot. The tagline — "An inside look at life on the New York Times obituaries desk." — captures that tone perfectly.
