National Theatre Live: Hangmen

At its core, National Theatre Live: Hangmen follows a story that unfolds like this: In his small pub in the northern English town of Oldham, Harry is something of a local celebrity. But what's the second-best hangman in England to do on the day they've abolished hanging? Amongst the cub reporters and pub regulars dying to hear Harry's reaction to the news, his old assistant Syd and the peculiar Mooney lurk with very different motives for their visit.

What sets it apart is how it treats its comedy and drama elements not as decoration but as the engine of the plot. The tagline — "You’re getting ‘hanged’ by nincompoops." — captures that tone perfectly. For a frame-by-frame breakdown, the dedicated Wikipedia entry and IMDb trivia pages are excellent companions.
