Whether you are a longtime fan or discovering it for the first time, Make Believe Ballroom rewards viewers who know what to look for. Led by Ruth Warrick and Jerome Courtland, the film balances spectacle with character. Below you'll find an honest look at the story, the people behind it, and whether it deserves a spot in your queue.
Make Believe Ballroom plot and story overview
At its core, Make Believe Ballroom follows a story that unfolds like this: Liza Lee, fast-talking press agent for Al Jarvis, persuades Jarvis to stage a Musical Mystery Contest, with a $5000 prize to the person who can first name the most musical numbers and their performers. Lots of musicians perform.
Rather than rushing, the film lets tension build naturally, trusting the audience to keep up. The tagline — "THE HEP PARADE OF '49...with a rousing line-up of top rhythm stars setting the downbeat for love!" — captures that tone perfectly.
