Whether you are a longtime fan or discovering it for the first time, Lonelyhearts rewards viewers who know what to look for. Led by Montgomery Clift and Robert Ryan, the film balances spectacle with character. Below you'll find an honest look at the story, the people behind it, and whether it deserves a spot in your queue.
Lonelyhearts plot and story overview
At its core, Lonelyhearts follows a story that unfolds like this: Burdened by a family secret, Adam White lands a job as a newspaper advice columnist. Little does he realize that it's all part of a nasty desire by cynical editor William Shrike to crush the souls of his underlings. Adam feels his readers' pain, and eventually, he takes an assignment to meet with Faye Doyle, who is exasperated by her crippled husband. When Faye tries to seduce Adam, he must choose between his job and his girl.
The pacing rewards patient viewers, layering small details that pay off later. The tagline — "SOME WIVES CHEAT BECAUSE THEIR HUSBANDS DO... AND SOME BECAUSE THEY'RE JUST NO GOOD!" — captures that tone perfectly. For a frame-by-frame breakdown, the dedicated Wikipedia entry and IMDb trivia pages are excellent companions.
