Few drama titles spark as much curiosity as I Am Making Art. Below is a deep dive into what makes it worth your time. It has steadily built a devoted audience since release. Below you'll find an honest look at the story, the people behind it, and whether it deserves a spot in your queue.
I Am Making Art plot and story overview
The narrative of I Am Making Art unfolds like this: In an ironic reference to body art, process art and performance, Baldessari challenges definitions of the content and execution of art-making. Performing with deadpan precision, he moves his hands, arms and entire body in studied, minute motions, intoning the phrase "I am making art" with each gesture. Each articulation of the phrase is given a different emphasis and nuance, as if art were being created from moment to moment. This index of body movements is ironically offset by the repetitive monotony of the exercise.
Rather than rushing, the film lets tension build naturally, trusting the audience to keep up. Themes of ambition, loyalty, and consequence run throughout. For a frame-by-frame breakdown, the dedicated Wikipedia entry and IMDb trivia pages are excellent companions.
