The premise of Great Day in the Morning, explained
The narrative of Great Day in the Morning unfolds like this: After a card game, Southerner Owen Pentecost finds himself the owner of a Denver hotel. Involved with two women, he then has to make even more fundamental choices when, with the start of the Civil War, he becomes one of a Confederate minority in a strongly Unionist town.
Rather than rushing, the film lets tension build naturally, trusting the audience to keep up. The tagline — "THE BUGLE BLAST that echoed thru history!" — captures that tone perfectly. For a frame-by-frame breakdown, the dedicated Wikipedia entry and IMDb trivia pages are excellent companions.
