Inside the story of From What Is Before
At its core, From What Is Before follows a story that unfolds like this: The Philippines, 1972. Mysterious things are happening in a remote barrio. Wails are heard from the forest, cows are hacked to death, a man is found bleeding to death at the crossroad, and houses are burned. Ferdinand E. Marcos announces Proclamation No. 1081, putting the entire country under Martial Law.
Rather than rushing, the film lets tension build naturally, trusting the audience to keep up. The tagline — "Memories of cataclysm." — captures that tone perfectly. For a frame-by-frame breakdown, the dedicated Wikipedia entry and IMDb trivia pages are excellent companions.
