Whether you are a longtime fan or discovering it for the first time, Farewell to the King rewards viewers who know what to look for. Directed by John Milius, the project blends war and adventure into something that lingers long after the credits. The premise of Farewell to the King, explained
Farewell to the King centers on a premise that unfolds like this: An American soldier who escapes the execution of his comrades by Japanese soldiers in Borneo during WWII becomes the leader of a personal empire among the headhunters in this war story told in the style of Joseph Conrad and Rudyard Kipling. The American is reluctant to rejoin the fight against the Japanese on the urging of a British commando team but conducts a war of vengeance when the Japanese attack his adopted people.
What sets it apart is how it treats its war and adventure elements not as decoration but as the engine of the plot. The tagline — "In the midst of war, one man vanished into the jungle, and emerged as king." — captures that tone perfectly.
