Few drama, history, and war titles spark as much curiosity as Empire of the Sun. Below is a deep dive into what makes it worth your time. Led by Christian Bale and John Malkovich, the film balances spectacle with character. Below you'll find an honest look at the story, the people behind it, and whether it deserves a spot in your queue.
What is Empire of the Sun about?
Empire of the Sun centers on a premise that unfolds like this: Jamie Graham, a privileged English boy, is living in Shanghai when the Japanese invade and force all foreigners into prison camps. Jamie is captured with an American sailor, who looks out for him while they are in the camp together. Even though he is separated from his parents and in a hostile environment, Jamie maintains his dignity and youthful spirit, providing a beacon of hope for the others held captive with him.
Rather than rushing, the film lets tension build naturally, trusting the audience to keep up. The tagline — "To survive in a world at war, he must find a strength greater than all the events that surround him." — captures that tone perfectly.
