Curse of the Golden Flower

Curse of the Golden Flower centers on a premise that unfolds like this: During China's Tang dynasty the emperor has taken the princess of a neighboring province as his wife. She has borne him two sons and raised his eldest. Now his control over his dominion is complete, including the royal family itself.

What sets it apart is how it treats its action, drama, and fantasy elements not as decoration but as the engine of the plot. The tagline — "Unspeakable secrets are hidden within the Forbidden City." — captures that tone perfectly.
