Chained (1934) has become one of the most talked-about romance and drama films, and this guide covers everything you need before you press play. Directed by Clarence Brown, the project blends romance and drama into something that lingers long after the credits. Below you'll find an honest look at the story, the people behind it, and whether it deserves a spot in your queue.
The premise of Chained, explained
Chained centers on a premise that unfolds like this: Richard, a millionaire in love with his secretary, Diane, is dispirited when his wife refuses to divorce him. Concerned that Diane will now lose interest, Richard offers her an all-expense-paid cruise to Argentina so that she can think it over. While traveling, however, Diane falls in love with fellow traveler Mike. She resolves to come clean to Richard, but upon return she becomes conflicted when she finds out he was able to get divorced after all.
Rather than rushing, the film lets tension build naturally, trusting the audience to keep up. The tagline — "When she's in his arms, it's the grandest thrill the screen can give!" — captures that tone perfectly.
