If Abata is on your watchlist, here is the complete breakdown — plot, cast, ratings, and where to stream it in HD. It has steadily built a devoted audience since release. Below you'll find an honest look at the story, the people behind it, and whether it deserves a spot in your queue.
What is Abata about?
At its core, Abata follows a story that unfolds like this: In 1955, fascinated by the ingenious pigeon hunting with wooden paddles and nets, Orson Welles directed the documentary The Land of the Basques. Today, from a mountain hut on the border between Navarre and France, Gerardo Damboriena, a veteran pigeon hunter, reveals to us in basque the secrets of this more than 700-year-old tradition, now on the verge of extinction.
The pacing rewards patient viewers, layering small details that pay off later. The tagline — "A short documentary film narrated by Orson Welles and Gerardo Damboriena, one of the last pigeon hunters of Etxalar" — captures that tone perfectly.
